Mallorca - Simply a Beautiful Mediterranean Island

Mallorca is one of the most popular holiday destinations of Europe. The largest island of the Balearic Islands is more than a holiday destination with sun, white sandy beaches and a great nightlife, it is an island rich in architecture and enchanting mountain villages that are blessed with that kind of still tranquillity that can bring you back to your senses.

Mallorca or Majorca, which one is correct ? well both are fine to use.On the island itself it is known as Mallorca, and comes from the Catalan language which is frequently spoken on this island. However many years ago the Island was known as Majorca (meaning Major Island of the Balearics). It is also commonly known as Majorca in the English speaking world though.

The island has an area of ??about 3,600 square kilometres, 554 of coastline and a population of less than a million inhabitants. The average annual temperature is of about 19 degrees Celsius and there is a yearly average of 3000 hours of sunshine, excellent good reasons to start looking for a property for sale in Mallorca.

Mallorca also known as the island of dreams has a varied landscape of mountains, valleys, pine forests, olive and almond trees and beaches. Other attractions include the Caves of Drach, the Sierra de Tramuntana and the Sanctuary of Lluc, the spiritual centre of Mallorca. One of the most representative buildings, architecturally speaking, is the Bellver Castle, as it is one of the only three European castles in existence with a circular form.

The Cathedral of Santa Mara of Palma, is famous for having a large rose-window and is of a gothic Levantine style, to the point of being known as the gothic eye. The Sanctuary of Lluch, the most important place on the island for pilgrimage, because there is to be found the Virgen de Lluch (Patron Saint of Mallorca). 'El Paseo' of Calvi is considered to be the 'green lung' of the municipality, with a length of 32 kilometres. The Castle of Bendinat was built in the XIX century by the Marquis of the Romana.

The Son Sant Joan international airport , located 8 km from Palma de Mallorca, is the main gateway to the island. There is a wide range of direct flights from many European cities, especially from Germany and the UK. If you arrive by sea, there are daily connections from different ports of the peninsula such as Barcelona, Valencia, Denia and other ports of the Balearic Islands such as Ibiza, Mahon and Ciutadella.

The Plaza de Espaa in Palma is connected to all towns and resorts on the island through a bus network that also connects you to the airport, the beach or the University. In this same square there is a line of trains to Inca, Manacor and Sa Pobla. Another train, in this case mainly for tourism, is the electric train which has been running since 1912, through the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains from Palma to Soller.

One of the biggest draws for a huge number of holiday makers to the Island of Mallorca are the fantastic and often very quiet coves or Calas as they are known as in Spanish. The Calas have superb beaches, secure bathing and crystal clean waters .
They are a great places to chill out, safe for all the family to enjoy the sand, sea and the local cuisine. The south east coast is home to the S Amarador beach which it sits in the Mondrago National Park and is a well preserved and unspoilt beach with magnificent views over the clear blue Mediterranean sea. It is made up of fine white sand and has often been voted the best beach in Spain.

Alcudia - The Pearl of North Mallorca

Situated near the northern tip of the Spanish island of Majorca, the picturesque little town of Alcudia watches proudly over the adjacent bay. Tourism in Alcudia is on the increase and is now one of the most visited villages in Majorca, boasting a charming atmosphere and a history dating back to a century BC. It is the fusion of Phoenician, Roman, Moorish and, of course, the vivid Spanish cultures which have shaped the area, and have given the town its distinctive identity.

Although Alcudia has opened up to tourism, it has remained quaint and has not been taken over my large-scale tourist developments. Enjoying family holidays in Alcudia is easy as the town caters perfectly for families with youngsters. The entire old town has been fully pedestrianized and great care has been taken to conserve its rich, deeply-rooted culture. A definite must-see attraction is Alcudia's Moorish wall, a perfectly preserved site which encircles the inner town  ever so breath-taking. Other historical sites of interest are the Roman theatre and the 300-year old bullring, located in town's northern flank. When you get a little peckish, why not grab some tapas or sit down to an exquisite Spanish menu in the centre of the old town? It will soon become clear why Alcudia is so special.

Andtrax and Sant Elm - Mallorca

Location: South West of the Balearic Island of Mallorca

Inland from Palma bay, you could certainly find worse ways to spend an afternoon than hopping on a bus to ANDRATX , a small, undeveloped town huddled among the hills to the west. From here, it's another short bus ride through a pretty, orchard-covered landscape to the dishevelled, low-key resort of SANT ELM .

There are plans to expand the resort, but at present it's a relatively quiet spot where there's a reasonable chance of a room in high season, either at the conspicuous Hotel Aquamarn or, preferably, at the Hostal Dragonera, a simple, modern building with clean and neat rooms, most of which offer sea views. For such a small place, there's also a surprisingly wide choice of cafs and restaurants , the best being Na Caragola, which specializes in seafood and has a charming terrace and ocean views.

From May to October, buses ply between Sant Elm and Andratx seven times a day Monday to Saturday, and once on Sundays (in winter, once daily). With more time to spare, boats shuttle across from Sant Elm's minuscule harbour to the austere offshore islet of Illa Dragonera , an uninhabited chunk of rock, some 4km long and 700m wide, with an imposing ridge of sea cliffs dominating its northwestern shore.

If you are thinking of staying in Andratx there are good selction of Hotels in Andratx. One of these  is the Mon Port Hotel and Spa located in the scenic harbour of Andratx, surrounded by mountains and with magnificent views. The luxury and the elegance of its Mediterranean style makes it unique. Mon Port offers you an attentive and helpful service to complement its unique character. The superb accommodation and the "gourmet" cuisine will make your stay unforgettable.
